About

The vision of the ASAP project is to move from words to action, from guidelines and recommendation to their strategic implementation, and, ultimately, from ad-hoc initiatives to integrated sustainability across the operation of National Olympic Committees (NOCs). In concrete terms, the mission of the project is, for the “mentee” NOCs, to create, adopt and start implementing integrated sustainability strategies in their organisations, and for the “mentor” NOCs to further improve their operations by sharing and learning from each other and from other experts in the field.

Why?

To address sustainability challenges in and through sport
As an integral part of society, the sport movement, too, is facing major challenges of our times such as climate change, plastic pollution or loss of biodiversity. Sport organisations and sport event organisers (can) have an impact – positive or negative – and should act accordingly (= minimize negative impact and maximise positive one).

To take on the responsibility
The universality and global appeal of sport means that the IOC and the Olympic Movement have a special responsibility to promote a sustainable future for our world. This is why sustainability, together with credibility and youth, is one of the three pillars of Olympic Agenda 2020 (IOC Sustainability Report, 2018).

To be part of a global response
With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we have a common language and common aims and targets to make the world more sustainable. As part of the Olympic Movement, we want to play our part in this global response.

To be the change we want to see
If we (Olympic Movement organisations) are to remain relevant in the future, and keep fulfilling our role of making the world a better place through sport, we cannot act (keep doing the same things) the same way. We need to change, or we will be changed.

To move from ad-hoc actions to integrated sustainability
One-off actions are not enough to tackle these challenges. True sustainability requires a holistic approach, where sustainability principles are integrated into all operational aspects, and where they become natural part of how people think and behave.

To create partnerships
By creating partnerships (Sustainable Development Goal no. 17), we will be able to learn from each other, share, and thus continuously improve. The results of the ASAP project will then help others to move forward on their sustainability journey.
